Bo Arpi, "International Turnaround Management"
English | 1999 | ISBN: 0333794257 | 400 pages | PDF | 31,6 MB
The role of a turnaround manager is to save companies from a seriously unprofitable situation. This may follow a merger, take-over, restructure or as a result of adverse market conditions or mismanagement. A "first class" turnaround manager is more than a short-term "company doctor", he or she redefines the company's business mission and restructures it for long-term survival. This book shows how to do this. It includes practical advice from experienced turnaround managers, real life examples of best practice and an objective guide to the principles involved in this increasingly important role.

Peter Atkins, Julio de Paula, "Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences, 2 edition"
 2011 | ISBN-10: 1429231149 | PDF | 590 pages | 33 MB

The behaviour of those macromolecules and molecular assemblies that have vital roles in all living organisms is grounded in physical chemistry. Physical principles determine the stability of proteins and nucleic acids, the rate at which biochemical reactions proceed, the transport of molecules across biological molecules; they allow us to describe structure and reactivity in complex biological systems, and make sense of how these systems operate. Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences fills a void in the textbook market by offering a balanced presentation of the concepts of physical chemistry, and their extensive applications to biology and biochemistry. It is written to straddle the worlds of physical chemistry and the life sciences and to show students how the tools of physical chemistry can elucidate and illuminate biological questions. Opening with a suite of chapters on Biochemical Thermodynamics, with a focus on energy conversion in biological cells and the factors that stabilize proteins, nucleic acids, and cell membranes, the book goes on to explore the Kinetics of Life Processes, examining the rates of chemical reactions, how rates can help characterise the mechanism of a reaction, and how enzymes affect reaction rates. A third section, Biomolecular Structure, looks at how concepts of physical chemistry can be used to establish those 'rules' that govern the assembly of complex biological structures, while the final section, Biomolecular Spectroscopy, describes the major techniques in biochemistry that are being applied to help us to explore biochemical processes and systems ever further. Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences places emphasis on clear explanations of difficult concepts, with an eye toward building insight into biochemical phenomena. A rich palette of pedagogical features, including worked examples, illustrations, self-tests, and case studies, support student learning throughout, while special attention is given to providing extensive help to students with those mathematical concepts and techniques that are so central to a sound understanding of physical chemistry. Balancing clarity and rigor of exposition of basic concepts with extensive discussion of biological techniques and processes, Physical Chemistry for the Life Sciences is the perfect resource for every life science student who seeks to master those essentials of physical chemistry that underpin life itself. Pedagogy: - A Biochemical link at the start of each section explains how the physical chemistry content of the section is related to a biological concept, providing clear connections to students and acting as motivators for understanding - Toolbox sections describe techniques, and link experimental method with physical chemistry concepts, so the student can understand how experimental techniques are used to probe and solve chemical questions - Maths comments explain mathematical relationships and background necessary for solving problems, providing guidance and insight to bolster student understanding - Derivations present detailed derivations of key equations, and delineate intermediate steps, showing the student the enormous power of even simple mathematics - Worked examples illustrate the concepts being presented, empowering the student to apply the concepts for themselves - Self tests occur throughout the chapters, to enable students to immediately test their understanding - Checklists of key ideas at the end of each chapter provide a bulleted list of the information students should grasp from the chapter, facilitating student revision - End of chapter exercises come in three varieties, to enable students to apply the concepts introduced and check their understanding: - Discussion questions stimulate the qualitative understanding of problems - Exercises assess quantitative understanding - Projects stimulate more in-depth examination of questions at both a qualitative and quantitative level Online Resource Centre - Web links for each chapter, pointing students to interesting sources of related information and data, to facilitate self-directed learning - A list of key equations for each chapter, to help students revise and master the key mathematical concepts that underpin the subject - Living graphs, which present graphs from the text in interactive format, and enable students to strengthen their learning - Full colour artwork from the text in downloadable form, to facilitate lecture preparation

A Course in Topological Combinatorics
by Mark de Longueville
2012 | ISBN-10: 1441979093 | PDF | 250 pages | 7 MB

A Course in Topological Combinatorics is the first undergraduate textbook on the field of topological combinatorics, a subject that has become an active and innovative research area in mathematics over the last thirty years with growing applications in math, computer science, and other applied areas. Topological combinatorics is concerned with solutions to combinatorial problems by applying topological tools. In most cases these solutions are very elegant and the connection between combinatorics and topology often arises as an unexpected surprise. The textbook covers topics such as fair division, graph coloring problems, evasiveness of graph properties, and embedding problems from discrete geometry. The text contains a large number of figures that support the understanding of concepts and proofs. In many cases several alternative proofs for the same result are given, and each chapter ends with a series of exercises. The extensive appendix makes the book completely self-contained. The textbook is well suited for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate mathematics students. Previous knowledge in topology or graph theory is helpful but not necessary. The text may be used as a basis for a one- or two-semester course as well as a supplementary text for a topology or combinatorics class.

Aristotle's Ethics and Moral Responsibility
by Javier Echeñique
2012 | ISBN: 1107021588 | English | 218 pages | PDF | 1.55 MB

Aristotle's Ethics develops a complex theory of the qualities which make for a good human being and for several decades there has been intense discussion about whether Aristotle's theory of voluntariness, outlined in the Ethics, actually delineates what modern thinkers would recognize as a theory of moral responsibility. Javier Echeñique presents a novel account of Aristotle's discussion of voluntariness in the Ethics, arguing - against the interpretation by Arthur Adkins and that inspired by Peter Strawson - that he developed an original and compelling theory of moral responsibility and that this theory has contributed in important ways to our understanding of coercion, ignorance and violence. His study will be valuable for a wide range of readers interested in Aristotle and in ancient ethics more broadly.

Armies of the Crusades (Men at Arms 75)
1997 | 48 Pages | ISBN: 0850451256 | PDF | 36 MB

In the early crusades men of all ranks from all over Europe took the cross and went to fight Islam as volunteers. Some went out of religious fervour, others to escape the plagues and famine which were rife at the time, still others in search of land or a fortune in loot. Fighting alongside all of these were the armies raised in Outremer, the Holy Land itself. Together they waged a bloody religious war, the participants of which included such forces as the Knights Templar, the Teutonic Knights, and the Byzantine Army.

A Numismatic Journey Through the Bible
by Rev. Richard Plant
English | 2007 | ISBN: 094896443X | PDF | 200 pages | 6,6 mb

The book illustrates coins contemporary to the New Testament as well as coins depicting images of Old Testament events and those linked to biblical lands or cities in some way. It practically re-tells the story of the bible using illustrations of coins to provide the pictures of the alleged events. Well written in the usual Richard Plant style. It will even appeal to people that aren't Christian and just have an interest in history. For those of you that are Christian, the book will help the stories and people of the bible seem more real. A good idea is to quote the last paragraph of the author's Preface:

Coronel and Falklands 1914 - Duel in the South Atlantic
English | 98 Pages | PDF | 5,3 MB

Upon the outbreak of war, the British Royal Navy was deployed globally, whilst the Imperial German Navy was concentrated in two areas - Home Waters and Tsingtao, the home port of the crack East Asia Cruiser Squadron which, under the command of Admiral von Spee contained some of Germany's most modern cruisers. As Spee made his way to the Chilean port of Valparaiso, he met the British 4th Cruiser Squadron which had been ordered to engage and defeat the German force. This resulted in the battle of Coronel where the antiquated British warships proved no match for Spee's modern cruisers. It was the first naval defeat suffered by the Royal Navy in over 100 years. When news reached London, panic reigned and two ships HMS Inflexible and Invincible were sent to lead the force against Spee. When bad weather delayed the German arrival, Spee knew that he had to stand and fight, unaware that amongst the ships opposing him were two modern battlecruisers which outclassed any of his own squadron's ships. Given the presence of Inflexible and Invincible, the result of the battle had an inevitable outcome and after several hours hard combat, Spee's ships were defeated.
